• According to the 2000 Census, the total population of Region Five was 438,300 persons. That is 119.8 persons per square mile in the region. The population density per square mile for the state as a whole was 141.4. Between 1990 and 2000, the region experienced a population growth of 33.5%, compared to the state growth during this period of 26.4%.

  • In the region, 76.6% of the population were classified as white and 19.3% as black. Hispanics, who may be identified as either white or black, represented 3.3% of the region's population.

  • The 2000 Census indicates that in Region Five, 25.3% of the region's population was age 18 or younger, while 10.0% was age 65 and older. Statewide, 26.5% was age 18 or younger and 9.6% was age 65 or older.

  • In 2000, 7.4% of the households in Region Five were headed by females with children under 18 years of age, compared with 8.6% statewide. Total households with children under 18 comprised 33.6% of all households in the region and 35.0% of those in the state.
