- The region lies on the Georgia
coast, between the South Carolina and Florida.
- The major cities in the region
are Savannah (Chatham County) on the coast, Statesboro (Bulloch
County) in the northern part of the region, and Brunswick (Glynn
County) on the southern coast.
- Interstate 95 runs north-south
along the coast. Interstate 16 cuts across the northern part of
the region, intersecting Interstate 95 outside of Savannah.
- US Highway 301 (also US Highway
25) winds along the western border of the region, moving north
to south, passing through Statesboro and into Brunswick. US Highway
280 cuts west across the region into Savannah as does US Highway
25 (also US Highway 84) heading northeast.
- There are a number of rivers
in this region including the Savannah River, which outlines the
Georgia State border with South Carolina to the north side of
the region. The Ogeechee River roughly parallels the Savannah
River and flows into the Atlantic Ocean south of Savannah. In
the center of the region, the Canoochee River flows through the
Fort Stewart Military Reservation. The Altamaha River flows in
the southern portion of the region, while at the southern extreme,
the Satilla River flows into the St. Andrews Sound and the St.
Marys River forms the Georgia State border with Florida.
- The State Parks in this region
are the Skidaway Island State Park and Fort McAllister State Historic
Parks in the Savannah area. The Crooked River State Park is near
the Florida State line in the extreme south of the region. The
Georgia coastline has many Islands that are preservation areas
of either the state or the federal government, among them: Cumberland,
Wolf, Sapelo, Blackbeard, Ossabaw, Skidaway and Tybee Islands.
