- This region is located in
the northeastern part of the state, bordering North Carolina to
the north and South Carolina to the east.
- The major cities in this
region include Gainesville (Hall County), located in the southeastern
part of the region, Dahlonega (Lumpkin County), and Toccoa (Stephens
County) near the eastern border of the region.

- Two interstates run through
the region, Interstate 85 and the northern portion of Interstate
985. Interstate 85 passes through Banks, Franklin and a small
part of Hart County on the southeastern side of the region. US
Highway 19 (GA 400) runs north-south through the western portion
of the region. US Highway 23 passes through Hall, Banks and Habersham
Counties, before continuing north through Rabun County. Finally,
US Highway 76 moves through the northern part of the region from
east to west.
- This region has a number
of lakes and rivers, the two most popular are Lake Sidney Lanier
and Lake Hartwell. Lake Lanier, located on the border of Forsyth,
Dawson Countyand Hall counties, provides the public water supply
and flood control for this region. Lake Hartwell borders the southeastern
portion of the region and South Carolina.
- The region has many state
parks such as Amicalola Falls, Black Rock Mountain, Vogel Park,
Unicoi Park and Lodge, Tallulah Gorge, Moccasin Creek Park, Victorica
Bryant Park, Hart State Park, Tugalo State Park and Smithgall
Woods Conservation Area. Traveler's Rest, a state historic site,
is located in the region near the South Carolina border. A portion
of the Appalachian Trail also lies in this region.
