The region is located in the northeast central part of the region surrounding
Atlanta.
The major cities in the region are Atlanta (Fulton and Dekalb Counties),
Marietta (Cobb County), East Point and Roswell (Fulton County), Decatur (Dekalb
County), and Lawrenceville (Gwinnett County).

There is an extensive Interstate system in the region, with Interstate 75
running through Atlanta northwest to southeast, Interstate 85 passing through
Atlanta northeast to southwest, and Interstate 20 cutting east west through the
city and east west through the region. Interstate 285 circles Atlanta linking
all of the interstates and major roads surrounding the city. Interstate 985
separates from 85 in Gwinnett County heading north, Interstate 675 connects
Interstates 75 and 285 in the southeast and Interstate 575 heads north after
passing through Marietta.
US Highway 19 (Georgia 400) moves north leaving Atlanta and out of the region,
while US Highway 41 enters the city from the south, exiting to the northwest. US
Highway 78 connects Atlanta with Stone Mountain to the east. US Highway 278
terminates at East Point after entering from the northwest.
The Etowah River flows through Cherokee County in the north, while the
Chattahoochee River passes through the whole region from Lake Lanier in the
northeast to Douglas County to the southwest. The Yellow River moves south
through Gwinnett County and into Rockdale County. The South River leaves Dekalb
County moving southeast out of the region.
Georgia's Stone Mountain Park lies in Dekalb County, while the Sweetwater Creek
and Panola Mountain Conservation Parks lie in the western and southeastern areas
of the region, respectively. A large portion of the Red Top Mountain State Park
also lies in Cherokee County to the north.
