April 17th Announcement of OneGeorgia Equity Awards for Region 6

City of Byron

$450,000 grant to assist with wastewater treatment system improvements to include connecting the area east of I-75 and south of GA Hwy 49 on Byron's system to the Warner Robins system via a two-mile 8-inch force main along Hwy 49. The project will immediately expand industrial wastewater capacity
for the North Peach Industrial Park and commercial arteries along Hwy 49. It will also alleviate the burden the geographical area places on Byron's existing system, currently under an EPD consent order.

Middle Georgia Regional Development Authority (Peach, Pulaski & Houston Counties)

$125,198 grant to assist Phase II, the construction of four one-half acre outdoor freshwater ponds in Pulaski County to further explore the feasibility and cultivation of marine shrimp in an inland farm environment. Phase I successfully demonstrated the ability to grow shrimp in an indoor environment in Perry, Georgia. The project has the opportunity to develop a new industry with strong regional impact, providing a viable option to traditional farming for Georgia's Farmers.

MIDSTATE FIRE DEPARTMENTS RECEIVE GRANTS

Five fire departments in Middle Georgia have received federal grants totaling more than $166,000, officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced today. The money is part of $28 million in federal grants given to 389 fire departments across the nation. The grants are part of the federal Assistance to Firefighters program sponsored by FEMA and the United States Firefighting Administration.

The following fire departments in Region 6 received grants:
. Fort Valley Fire Department, $26,856 for fire prevention
. Milledgeville Fire Department, $40,399 for fire prevention.

Georgia Heritage Grant Program

The award recipients for 2001 are:

Hubbard School, Forsyth, Monroe County - $9,000 The Hubbard School was originally constructed in 1934 to serve as the women's dormitory on the campus of the State Teachers and Agricultural College (STAC), which, at that time, was the official school for the instruction of African American teachers and one of three black colleges included in the University System of Georgia. After STAC closed, the dorm building housed teachers on the upper story and overflow classroom space for the Hubbard Elementary and the Hubbard High School on the first floor from 1939 and 1970. Grant money will be used to produce a master plan to guide the Hubbard Alumni in their restoration efforts. Once rehabilitation is complete, the Alumni Association plans to use the building as an African American museum and cultural center.

Monroe County Courthouse, Forsyth, Monroe County - $12,000 Designed by Atlanta architects Bruce and Morgan, this high Victorian courthouse was built in 1896. Grant funding will produce a master plan for the building's preservation, restoration and future use.

Putnam County Jail, Eatonton Historic District, Eatonton, Putnam County - $16,100 Designed in colonial revival style by the Macon architectural firm of Dennis and Dennis, this jail, built in 1938, housed cells, a processing office and private residence of the sheriff and his family. Since the 1990's, the building has been used as a county records management facility. Grant funds will be used to repair the roof to secure the building from further water infiltration.
