- The
region is located on the southwestern side of the state, bordering
Alabama.
-
The major cities in this region include Columbus (Columbus-Muscogee
County), located along the Alabama border, Americus (Sumter County),
located southeast of Columbus, and Cordele (Crisp County), located
in the southeastern part of the region. Fort Benning Military
Reservation (Chattahoochee County), the world's largest infantry
camp, is located just to the south of Columbus along the Alabama
border.
- Two interstate highways run
through the region, Interstate 185 and Interstate 75. Interstate
185 connects Columbus with Interstate 85 just outside the northern
boundary of the region in Troup County. Interstate 75 passes through
Crisp and Dooly Counties on the eastern side of the region. A
number of US highways run through the region, including US Highway
19 which moves north-south through Taylor and Schley Counties,
then passes through Americus in Sumter County in the center of
the region. Other US Highways in the region include 27 going south
from Columbus, 82 running east-west across the southern tip of
the region, and 280, passing through Americus along the south-central
border of the region.
- The
Flint River and the Chattahoochee River are the two major rivers
that flow through the region. The Flint River forms Lake Blackshear
in Crisp County after passing through the east-central portion
of the region. The region's largest body of water is the Walter
F. George Reservoir, located on the Georgia/ Alabama border in
the southern portion of the region.
- The region is home to a number
of state parks, such as George T. Bagby State Park, Franklin D.
Roosevelt State Park, Florence Marina State Park, Georgia Veterans'
Memorial State Park and Providence Canyon Conservation Park. In
addition, there are three national sites in the region: Andersonville
National Historic Site, Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, and
